HomeAid Atlanta Becomes HomeAid Georgia
On any given night there are an estimated 12,294 people experiencing homelessness in the state of Georgia based on the 2023 Point In Time (PIT) Count, an annual census done every January. Over the last 23 years, HomeAid Atlanta has worked in a nine-county metro Atlanta footprint to build a future without homelessness. Those counties account for 4,770 of the total PIT Count. This month, HomeAid Atlanta becomes HomeAid Georgia, expanding its reach to serve even more people in need.
HomeAid Atlanta now Georgia is an affiliate of HomeAid, a national nonprofit organization that builds, renovates, and maintains facilities for organizations serving people experiencing homelessness. Founded locally in 2001 by home builders who believe that everyone deserves a safe, dignified, and affordable place to call home, HomeAid Atlanta now Georgia has completed over 200 construction projects valued at nearly $12M at locations for victims of domestic violence, teen mothers, veterans and more. By utilizing connections with building industry professionals, HomeAid has saved nonprofit provider organizations nearly $7M through construction projects and volunteer workdays known as HomeAid Care Days. HomeAid also provides essential items like diapers, wipes, and hygiene products to those affected by homelessness.
“While numbers fluctuate from year to year and there is always a severe undercount in the PIT numbers, we knew that we were only focused on about 40% of the need throughout Georgia. Homelessness in suburban and rural areas is growing as housing becomes less and less affordable,” said Mandy Crater, Executive Director of HomeAid Atlanta now Georgia. “We are excited that this statewide expansion will allow us to really get to know the needs in all 159 counties through existing nonprofits already doing the work of providing housing and supportive services. We look forward to working with Home Builders Associations and building industry friends throughout the state to help meet those needs.
HomeAid’s expansion beyond the metro Atlanta area has already begun. HomeAid Georgia will soon break ground on a domestic violence shelter in Jackson County in need of a new facility, as well as partner with the Athens Area and Midwest Georgia Home Builders Associations to support their 2025 community service efforts.
